| I lived for 23 years in a small town in British Columbia where I brought up two children and worked as a child care worker. Four years ago I moved to Edmonton in the middle of January, arriving in a frigidly cold day with more snow than I had seen in my life and I missed my friends, my home, my job, and the beautiful scenery that I was accustomed to painting.....To say that I was depressed would be an understatement, and each time I would take my dog for a walk in the neighborhood I felt claustrophobic and sad. I couldn't think of anything to paint and I was generally in a "funk". One day, however, as I was walking with my dog I noticed how the shadows danced across the snow, and how interesting the back alleys around my home were, with their garbage cans and their fences in need of repair, and the overhead telephne lines....suddenly I had subject matter to paint! So I began painting my neighborhood, and soon what I once saw as small, uninteresting little houses became something beautiful, and the back alleys were gorgeous! Painting these little homes replaced the scenery of British Columbia for me, and I began seeing my neighborhood in a different light. I now love living here and am having such fun painting again. |
