Biography
April Mercredi was born in Calgary,AB.  Her ancestral background is Cree/Metis.  In her childhood, her parents moved from Calgary to Rocky Mountain House, AB.  Moving to Rocky provided diverse experiences stemming from living in the bush; going to a one - room school house; living in poverty and starvation, and interacting with her mother's extended aboriginal family.  It was a cultural shock, combined with devastating experiences, that was etched forever into memory, later influencing her art.

April graduated with a Visual Arts Diploma and additional art studies from Red Deer Collge, Red Deer, AB.  As a former Life Skills coach, she integrated all life experiences into her paintings when teaching or painting.

As an emerging artist, April has exhibited in several art shows and recieved several awards and certificates of excellence.

On Sept. 01, 2002, her painting, 'The Dancer', was purchased by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.  Soon after, she won second place at an annual Peace Hills Trust Native Art Contest; followed by the Peace Hills Award cermony given to honor the artist.

At present, April's art can be viewed at the Westlands Art Gallery, Cochrane, AB; Caelin Art Gallery, Wetaskiwin, AB; Bearclaw Art Gallery, Edmonton, AB, with future venues to follow.
