Cindy Revell
It is the simple things in life that give me the most pleasure and so it is with my art. A cow staring at me, a simple pile of vegetables, or a burning barrel are humble moments worthy of painting. I want to achieve a look that is both vibrant and alive with colour yet calming and peaceful. This reflects how I feel when I look at a subject and paint it, there is a great sense of joy and peacefullness that comes with simply sitting and closely observing the objects that one is painting.

My art begins with a golden monochromatic underpainting that help give the paintings a rich, warm glow and is similar to techniques practiced by the old masters. I progress with layers of paint, sometimes thicker and sometimes thin, allowing the underpainting to show through in places. This style of painting makes me feel connected to the artists who have gone before me and in my own way and in my own time I am carrying on a tradition that has been passed on through the centuries.

My paintings may have a feel of art from the past but they are very much connected to the here and now. In the end, my paintings are a homage to the great beauty that can be found in the ordinary.

Biography
Cindy Revell received her training as a graphic designer and illustrator eventually going on to become an award winning freelance illustrator. Her work has been used on billboards, wine bottles, books, magazines, calendars, and children's books. She was nominated in 2001 for a Governor General's award for children's book illustration (Mallory and the Power Boy). Adobe, L.A. Times, Washington Post, Harvard Business Review, Better Homes and Gardens, Cornell University, Penguin Putnam, and Scholastic are just a few of the clients Cindy has worked with.

People always ask what inspires her. Everything and anything. Cindy loves the work of  the Flemish painters, Melendez, Rousseau, and is inspired by folk, medieval, and eastern art.

Cindy loved the creativity of illustration and the pleasure of working with a variety of clients all over North America but wanted to push herself further and began oil painting in 2002. Three years of regular oil painting classes with Gene Prokop, workshops with Allen Myndzak, Sutton Art, and travelling to view and learn from the old masters has helped her develop as a traditional reallist.

What was only an interest quickly turned into a passion. Her traditional oil paintings are filled with rich, luminous colour and a glowing light that makes humble objects seem much more than ordinary.

Cindy is a member of Oil Painters of America, Society of Western Canadian Artists and the Art Society of Strathcona County. She is represented by Harbor House Gardens Gallery in Searsport, Maine.
